Seeding in a built-out city
Hydroseeding in Tempe looks different from the newer suburbs. The city is landlocked at about 40 square miles, so there are few raw subdivisions left. Most of the work is renovating older yards, finishing redevelopment sites and stabilizing small disturbed areas where space is tight and storm drains are close.
Buttes in the middle of town
Tempe is generally flat except for its buttes: Tempe Butte (Hayden Butte, known as A-Mountain), Twin Buttes, Bell Butte and the buttes in Papago Park. Elevation runs from 1,140 feet at Tempe Town Lake to 1,495 feet atop Hayden Butte. Homes and properties at the foot of those buttes take runoff off rock, which can cut through a new lawn. A short diversion swale or a strip of erosion control blanket along the uphill edge does a lot of good.
The river and the lake
The Salt River runs west through northern Tempe, where inflatable rubber dams hold Tempe Town Lake. The lake was first filled in 1999, and in July 2010 a section of the west dam burst and drained it. The dams are lowered during high runoff to let floodwater pass. Properties near the river bed see the same desert pattern as the rest of the Valley: little rain, then sudden flows. Sediment control on sites near the river channel is taken seriously for that reason.
Redevelopment sites
Commercial and high-rise construction along the lake changed Mill Avenue and the downtown skyline, and the car-free Culdesac Tempe project went up on a vacant 17-acre lot. Sites like these need silt fence, inlet protection and, once grading is done, hydromulch or hydroseed on any ground that will stay open. Urban jobs also mean careful hose runs and tight staging, which a hydroseeding truck handles better than crews spreading straw by hand.
Older lawns
Tempe averages about 8.80 inches of rain a year and has more than 50 neighborhood and community parks. Plenty of Tempe lawns date back decades. Overseeding, lawn repair and soil prep on compacted spots are the most common residential requests.

Tempe Questions
Can a hydroseed truck get into a small Tempe backyard?
The truck stays on the street or driveway and we run hose into the yard, so narrow side yards are usually fine.
Water from the butte keeps washing across my yard. What helps?
A shallow swale along the uphill side and a blanket on the steepest part slow the water down before it reaches the lawn.
Do you do silt fence for small redevelopment lots?
Yes. Small urban sites near storm drains often need silt fence and inlet protection more than big rural ones do.
Is overseeding enough for an old Tempe lawn?
If the bermuda is still alive across most of the yard, overseeding and topdressing usually are. If it is mostly bare, we discuss full renovation.
