From flat lawns to foothill lots
Hydroseeding in Peoria covers a long stretch of country. The city covers about 179 square miles, sits at 1,581 feet, and reaches north into foothills and Yavapai County. Older south Peoria neighborhoods are flat and lawn-friendly. North Peoria lots sit among named peaks like Sunrise Mountain, West Wing Mountain, Calderwood Butte and the Hieroglyphic Mountains, where slope stabilization matters more than turf.
Foothill grading
On hillside lots, a building pad is cut into the slope and the spoil is pushed downhill. Both the cut face and the fill bank are bare after construction. Hydromulch or a bonded fiber matrix with a native seed mix holds that ground until plants root. On longer or steeper banks, an erosion control blanket pinned in place is the safer choice.
Dry rivers that still flood
The Agua Fria and New River are the only rivers that flow through Peoria, and both are usually dry because of New Waddell Dam and New River Dam. Several washes and creeks also cross the city, with Skunk Creek the best known. Dry channels lull people into building close to them. Silt fence and sediment control along the channel side of a site are important when storms do come.
Lake Pleasant
Peoria annexed Lake Pleasant in 1996. The reservoir on the Agua Fria covers about 10,000 acres after New Waddell Dam was finished in 1994, and the city relies largely on the Central Arizona Project canal that draws from it. Homes on the north side are closer to open desert than to any lawn, so many owners there choose native seeding or a small lawn area plus revegetated slopes.
Rain and temperature
Peoria averages about 9.19 inches of precipitation a year and has seen record highs of 122 degrees in June and July. New seed on any slope here needs both water and cover to make it through its first summer.

Peoria Questions
My north Peoria lot has a steep fill slope. What should go on it?
A native seed mix in bonded fiber matrix, or a pinned erosion control blanket on the steepest parts, holds the soil while plants establish.
Do I need a lawn on a foothill lot?
Not necessarily. Many owners do a small lawn near the house and native seeding on the rest of the disturbed ground.
Is it safe to grade near a dry wash?
Grading near a wash is common, but keep sediment out of it with silt fence and avoid pushing fill into the channel.
Can you seed in south Peoria neighborhoods too?
Yes. Flat valley yards there are a straightforward fit for hydroseed lawns and overseeding.
