Hydroseeding in Fountain Hills, AZ
A town built on slopes, where storm runoff crosses roads in named washes.

- A written watering plan with every new seeding
Steep lots need more than seed
Hydroseeding in Fountain Hills is mostly about slopes. The town sits on the east side of the south end of the McDowell Mountains, rising from about 1,520 feet at the fountain to 3,190 feet on its western border. Many homes are built on cut-and-fill pads, and those banks are the places that erode first.
Washes that close roads
Ashbrook, Balboa, Legend and Colony washes run through town, and during rain they flood and can block traffic. That is a clear sign of how quickly water collects on these hillsides and how much loose soil it can carry with it. Lots next to a wash need their disturbed ground stabilized quickly after construction. A bonded fiber matrix or erosion control blanket along the wash side keeps sediment from washing into the channel and onto the road.
Volcanic hills
The McDowell Mountains here are described as a chain of extinct volcanic remnants. Soil on these slopes is often thin and rocky. On a steep bank there is not much for seed to hold onto, so we use heavier mulch, a tackifier and often a blanket pinned with staples. A native seed mix usually establishes better than turf on those banks.
A dark sky community
Fountain Hills was named an International Dark Sky Community in January 2018. Many residents prefer natural desert over big green lawns. Native grass seeding and wildflower seeding match that look while still holding soil.
Rain and heat
The town averages about 10.18 inches of precipitation a year, more than Phoenix. The record high is 125 degrees. Seed on slopes needs to germinate and root before summer, so late winter and early spring are good windows for revegetation. Irrigated lawns on flatter lots can be seeded later, once soil temperatures are up.

Fountain Hills Questions
How do you seed a steep bank behind my Fountain Hills home?
With heavier hydromulch and tackifier, or a bonded fiber matrix, and a pinned erosion control blanket on the steepest sections.
My lot borders a wash. Is that a problem for seeding?
It means we protect the wash side first so sediment does not wash into the channel during storms.
Can you match the natural desert look?
Yes. A native grass and wildflower mix blends with the surrounding hills.
What time of year should a Fountain Hills slope be seeded?
Late winter or early spring, so plants root before summer heat and monsoon storms.
