Old water and new subdivisions
Hydroseeding in Glendale often means working with two very different kinds of yard. In the historic part of town, the city still runs irrigation water, and many lots are flood irrigated. Out west near Loop 303, finished in 2011, new subdivisions sit on ground that was farmed not long ago. The seed is the same, but the grading and watering plan is not.
Flood-irrigated lots
Glendale grew around the Arizona Canal, a 40-mile channel from Granite Reef to the New River completed in 1885 by William John Murphy, whose company sold land and water rights south of it. On a flood-irrigated lot, the yard is a shallow basin with berms around the edge. If you are planting a new hydroseed lawn there, the floor has to be level so water spreads evenly. High spots stay dry and low spots drown the seed. Laser-level fine grading is worth the time.
New homes on the west side
Cotton farms still line parts of Loop 101, and farming shaped much of the west side. The city's annexation strategy in the 1970s claimed territory ahead of growth, and Loop 303 opened the far west to building. New backyards there often have builder fill and little topsoil. We test, amend and grade before we spray.
Two rivers on the western edge
The New River and the Agua Fria River flow south through the city's western edge. Both are usually dry, but they carry water during big storms. Construction close to those channels needs silt fence and sediment control to keep loose soil out of the riverbeds.
Sugar beets to subdivisions
Glendale's Beet Sugar Factory ran from 1906 to 1913, and farming shaped the city long after it closed. Old field soils are often good for grass seeding once they are loosened, because they have been worked and watered for generations.

Glendale Questions
My Glendale lot is flood irrigated. Can it be hydroseeded?
Yes. The key is leveling the basin so irrigation water spreads evenly. We fine grade first, then seed, and time the first flood carefully.
How soon after hydroseeding can I take irrigation water?
Not right away. A heavy flood can float the seed. We usually suggest sprinklers or hand watering until the grass is established.
Do new west Glendale yards need topsoil?
Many do, because builder fill is low in organic matter. We check the soil before quoting.
Is silt fence required near the rivers?
Construction near the channels should keep sediment on site. We install silt fence and inlet protection as the plan requires.
