Seeding big lots under the mountains

Hydroseeding in Paradise Valley works at a different scale than in most suburbs. After World War II, the town was settled on lots of one to five acres, and that is still how it is known. With that much ground, owners often split it between a hydroseed lawn near the house, native areas and slopes that need to stay put.

Two mountains

Mummy Mountain dominates the town's central terrain, Camelback Mountain sits on the southern border and the Piestewa Peak area lies on the west. Camelback's higher peak is Precambrian granite about 1.5 billion years old, while its camel's head is red sandstone. Granite slopes shed coarse sand and gravel, and lots below them get runoff during storms. Grading that guides water around the house and lawn is the first step.

Named for wildflowers

The name Paradise Valley may reflect the spring wildflowers and palo verde trees surveyors found here in the 1880s, when the Rio Verde Canal Company laid out agricultural lots. Wildflower seeding on unwatered parts of a large lot is a good way to honor that and keep disturbed soil from blowing or washing away.

Renovation and remodel work

When a home on a big lot is remodeled or rebuilt, the work leaves torn-up lawns, trenches and bare soil. We handle lawn repair over trench lines, renovation of whole lawns after construction and erosion control on disturbed slopes. If the property needs a drain line or regrading dug in, the same crew can do that excavation.

Desert to farm to estates

The area was mainly agricultural through the first half of the 1900s and was used for cattle grazing before that. The town incorporated in 1961. Old farm soils on the flatter lots usually take seed well once compaction from construction traffic is broken up.

Paradise Valley Questions

Can you fix the lawn after our remodel?

Yes. We regrade torn-up areas, add soil where needed and hydroseed or overseed to bring the lawn back.

Should my whole acre be lawn?

Most owners keep lawn near the house and use native or wildflower seeding on the rest. It saves water and still holds soil.

Runoff from Mummy Mountain crosses our property. Can grading help?

Yes. A swale or berm can route it around the house and lawn, with erosion protection where the water enters.

Can you patch trench lines from new utility work?

Yes. Lawn repair over trenches is a common job and blends well with hydroseed.
